Garlic is one of my favourite ingredients. I use it in my diet daily in stir-fries, salads, brunch plates, curries, stews. It not only tastes great it has a plethora of health benefits.
Throughout history garlic’s main use was for medicinal purposes. The health benefits are caused by the sulphur compounds when the garlic is crushed, chopped, or chewed. Allicin is the most well known compound.
ANTIFUNGAL: Used for conditions like Candida Albicans. Some studies have compared its efficacy to Antifungal drugs with positive results.
ANTIVIRAL: Used for colds, lung infections, and conditions like H. pylori
Most studies show its effects on the cardiovascular system.
Active compounds have been shown to help reduce blood pressure, serum triglycerides, and cholesterol levels.
ANTIOXIDANT activity: destroying free radicals which cause oxidative stress on the body.
ANTI INFLAMMATORY: Inhibits prostaglandin (Prostaglandins are compounds in the body made of fats that have hormone-like effects)
May help the body with liver detoxification: higher doses have been shown to have positive effects against organ damage from heavy metal toxicity
